Free music...

MP3 blogs.

I love em. The second best thing the internet has to offer...

If you don't know usually it's people or groups who love music, write about it and then give you an example in MP3 form.

Here are some of I check daily. With a link to the site and an example of songs you can get there.

http://funky16corners.wordpress.com/
My new favorite classic soul website. I actually don't read the blog much but he offers long, mixes of soul songs organized around a theme. Recent themes included "Soul Strings", "Soul Hammond Organ", "Beatles Covers" and "Popcorn Songs".
You can also download each song in the mix in a zip file. Here's a recent single song:
Geraldo Pino: Heavy, Heavy, Heavy *

http://soul-sides.com/
Used to be my fav classic soul site, still a winner, but this is where you go to hear great songs and learn a ton about the song, the artist and because it's written by "a PhD in Ethnic Studies from UC Berkeley."
Rita Wright: Touch Me, Take Me

http://stereogum.com/
Stereogum is a hipster site that likes art rock almost as much as it likes making fun of heiresses. Hit or miss but often has hidden gems.
Kings Of Leon: "My Party (Kenna And Chad Hugo Remix)"

http://rawkblog.blogspot.com/
This site is new to me and it seems to love indie rock, bootlegs and covers. And although we just started going steady, I'm already wearing it's letterman jacket.
Ryan Adams: "I Want it That Way" (live Backstreet Boys cover)

http://mashuptown.com/
Ok, sorry, I like mash-ups... screw you.
DJ Topcat: Young Folks Rehab

*I'm stealing these download links and they are often temporary so grab em' now. (If you right click and open in a new tab/window you can preview before download. If you want to keep 'em, right click and then click 'save link as'.)

My first real HATER!!!

I got my first real hater today. Other than EVIL JOHN that is. Some winner over on youtube posted this on my video "A Rocky Love Story":

"Typical pretty Quincy girl. They all seem to date fat double chinned ugly guys that are out of shape. I use to live there and was in great shape with all my hair and could never get a stuckup Quincy girl. They all date fat guys"

My wife's response:
"Dear sir,
Thank you for the compliment(?). But you've got it completely wrong. Not only do I not live in Quincy, but I wasn't even born in Eastern Massachusetts. My fat, balding husband of five years is the love of my life, who also does not live in Quincy. Perhaps when you're looking in the mirror at your "great shape" and full head of hair you should also take a moment to look inside yourself and find out why women don't like you."

I'm going to be so bummed out if he's just a friend playing a trick on me.

HATERS RULE!!!

Another 48 hrs...

Filmmaker, photographer, audio specialist, and boxing enthusiast, Chris Engles, documented the creation of the most recent 48 hour film project that I was involved in.

A brief hiatus...

Unfortunately, the EVIL JOHN show will have to take a brief hiatus because one of it's starring players is recovering from back surgery. That's right, the one and only C. Angus Floyd (pictured above), the hardest working cat in show business will be taking time off from his budding film career. We here at the EVIL JOHN show feel that there really wouldn't be a show without the wit and wisdom he brings to our productions.

If you would like to send your thoughts, prayers and/or treats to Angus, please comment on this blog post. All comments will be read to Angus and if possible he will dictate a reply.

And don't worry, as soon as Angus is back on four feet, the show will go on.

DAILY INCIDENTS FOR APRIL 2, 2007

MOVIE BUFF ARRESTED AFTER RIPPING OFF BLOCKBUSTER

At about 3:29pm, on Sunday, April 1, 2007, officers from District C-6 (South Boston) responded to a radio call for a robbery in progress at the Blockbuster Video Store on Old Colony Avenue. A description of the suspect (a 5’6” white male with blonde hair, wearing a black hat, black sweater, jeans) was broadcast over Channel 6 of the police radio. According to witnesses, the suspect entered the store, grabbed a bunch of videos (approx. 8 – 10) and then took off out of the store. Officers then located an individual fitting the above description sitting on the stairs inside the Old Colony Housing Development. The suspect was then brought back to the Blockbuster where he was positively identified. Officers then arrested Kxxxx Cxxxxx, 19, of South Boston and charged him with Larceny (under $250.00.

---

Not the first time the words 'ripping off' and 'Blockbuster' were in a sentence together, but usually the sentence diagram looks a little different.

So how does the Boston Police define a 'Movie Buff"? I have a call into investigators to see which films were 'ripped off'.

If the films were French New Wave, then it fits. Early Scorsese, definitely. Remake of a Japanese horror film, well... But if the films starred a lesser Baldwin, promised to bring the 'Van Dammage', or had the word 'Momma' in the title - I'd be worried about the judgment of our local police force.

I love a good ending.

I found this great site called Motion Abbey that calls itself "a filter videoblog of aggregated content now playing around the internet (i.e. stuff that we like)."

During lunch today I watched an hour-long BBC pseudo-documentary about possible end of the world scenarios. It followed one man's attempt to get from London to New York on the day that his particle accelerator would be turned on despite protesters that claim the machine might cause an end of world event.

Well, a funny thing happens on the way to world destruction... in Groundhog Day fashion, each new day starts with a possible end of the world scenario, when the shit really hits the fan, the day starts over again.

If you have an hour to kill, check it out.

I'm actually pretty obsessed with the end of the world. Right now I'm reading the Pocket Guide to the Apocolypse. It's a look at the last and possibly most controversial part of the bible, the Book of Revelation. (Sorry, Job, it's true.) It's actually more about the nuts who take it literally. I'm looking at you 700 Club.

I highly recommend both. Especially if, like me, you're interested in not only the beginning of the end, the middle and end of the end.

Old 2.0

So two Sunday's ago a read this article in the City Weekly section of the Boston Globe and got all heated and wrote a letter. They quickly called and asked permission to use my letter, but then they didn't print it.

Because I hate effort with little or no reward, here's the letter I wrote.

I've found that my editorial judgement varies greatly from the folks at the Globe... meaning I'll print any stupid thing that any nutcase will write.
------------

I'm not embarrassed for Boston. I'm embarrassed for the old people of Boston. The Boston Police Department pride themselves on having the oldest police force in the United States. With this successful marketing incident, they may have proven that ‘oldest’ doesn't only mean longest running.

Although I think the BostonPD responded well to an unknown situation, the same can not be said for Boston’s second ‘oldest’ institution, its aging mass media. The best of user generated web content (Web 2.0) consists of several audiences informing each other. It can be a platform for people with ideas to get them out to people who are interested in ideas. This seems opposed to the more senior form of media (Globe/Herald/4/5/7) that often seems intent on promoting fear, condemning imaginary evildoers, and terrorizing its audience.

Like the people who weren’t clued in to the Orson Welles’ "War of the Worlds" broadcast, a group of people with large soapboxes ran around like chickens with their heads cut off. Unfortunately for them, being headless makes it very difficult to save face. So cutting off the heads of a couple of young artists will have to do.

Although I’m bordering on old, I’m not embarrassed for Boston. This event shows my town as the home of artists that can bring a city to a standstill. It’s the home of “plugged in” comedians that can poke fun at a media/police/mayoral circus. It’s the home of new media producers that will now have plenty of material for those slow news days when Apple doesn’t have a new iPod coming out.

It is also the home of the most entertaining press conference of all time. That is unless there is some footage on the internet somewhere of artist and rabble-rouser Paul Revere, after being captured on his famous ride, meeting ye olde British Press, refusing to take any questions that weren't about powdered wigs.

Do we have the energy for another one?

I don't know if I can muster the energy for this but maybe you can.

Great Flick

Although it's probably too late to muster any troops for tonight's showing...

There's a great flick playing at the Coolidge Corner Theater tonight.

Hopefully you've heard of it. Any synopsis or review of the film that I write would be in adequate.

Okay, so I'll try anyway.

Four Eyed Monsters is a film about two people falling in love in a very unconventional and inspirationally creative way. During the early part of their courtship they decide to only communicate through creative endeavors (writing/painting/filmmaking) and not through speaking. The film is an extension of these creative endeavors that stretchs the boundaries of what you can do with off the shelf editing software and store bought video cameras. Don't believe me? Well, their self financed film was nominated for a couple of Independent Spirit Awards this weekend.

I saw it in the fall. It's great and it lived up to it's own hype.

Check out their site for better info including video podcasts, a synopsis, reviews and tutorials about how they did it and more importantly how you could do it too.

URL Change

Tired of all that typing when you need a fix of mud, blood and/or beer. Well the staff here at themudthebloodthebeer.blogspot.com are happy to announce a URL change. Now instead of having to type themudthebloodthebeer.blogspot.com you can just type themudthebloodthebeer.com.

I know, it's still too damn long, but all the good short names are taken.

You know, if you're not a fan of the whole brevity thing, you can still reach us themudthebloodthebeer.blogspot.com.

Also, please contact me if you have any problems with the new URL.

A new section of stuff, that's readily dowloadable, that I had some part in making?
